CULTURE NEWS

  • Abilene Preservation League received a $60,000 grant to launch a feasibility study for repurposing the WTU power plant into a mixed-use venue with dining, retail, and outdoor gathering options (including rock wall climbing and a zip line) that will preserve its historic significance.  KTXS
  • Swenson House is hosting a Women’s History Month exhibit through March that shows photos, clothes, books and artifacts about local women leaders (including Shirley Swenson, Allie Ward, Dr. Virginia Connally and Nellie Paramore Sellers) at the historic museum.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Junior ROTC teams from 15 Texas schools competed at Cooper High School during the Cougar Nation Classic Drill Competition on Feb. 28 and Feb. 29, 2026 — testing their skills in drills, color guard duties and fitness challenges.  Abilene Reporter News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Abilene State Park cautions visitors that actions like painting rocks & stripping juniper tree bark threaten wildlife habitats and historic artifacts. Superintendent Craig Simpson advises joining ranger-led walks to learn conservation and asks visitors to leave no trace.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mysterious seed packages have been delivered across Texas, including the Abilene area, and Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said today not to plant them. Residents with a package must contact the Texas Department of Agriculture at (800) 835-5832 or heat the seeds in an oven to stop growth.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Avishek Kumar, a board-certified oncologist, said younger adults are increasingly diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer and urged more screenings. He developed special precautions (drawing on his U.S. Air Force Reserve experience as a lieutenant colonel) to catch issues early, and his recommendations are under discussion today.  KTXS
