COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Abilene Zoo will break ground next week on its largest $27 million expansion that adds eight new exhibits, a café and an amphitheater to support breeding programs for lions & rhinos, funded by a previous bond vote and private donations.  KTXS
  • The Humane Society of North Texas has taken in about 40 dogs from the Caps property and said they could not take in four additional dogs due to capacity limits + the remaining dogs will be placed with foster families later this week.  KTXS
  • Residents along Corsicana Avenue petition the city to install speed bumps to address dangerous speeding on a 30 mph road (drivers reportedly reaching 50-60 mph) that endangers children near Scarborough Park; several incidents, including a hit-and-run and a deadly crash, have raised safety concerns.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arrow Ford Motors recognizes outstanding teacher Kimberley McMillon at Clyde High School in this week's Teacher Tribute. Nominated by student Kaylee Allmand, she said the honor inspires her to help students reach their full potential.  KTXS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crissy Ward of Sadie Grace Farms is educating locals on bee protection as honeybees pollinate about one in three bites of food today. She advises the public not to kill a bee, noting local hobbyists help boost Texas' bee population.  KTXS

  • Abilene Women's Rugby Club now has 13 members, meeting Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (800-899 S. Mockingbird Lane field) under coach Jon Howell; the club recently received a jersey sponsorship and invites local women to learn and compete.  Abilene Reporter News
