COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Abilene’s Salvation Army gives shelter and meals daily to people in need, with a shelter of 108 beds on Butternut Street and a food truck that makes up to 1500 meals during emergencies. Captain Joshua McKain said the group serves about 125 meals each day and depends on local support to keep its services running — a key help for the community.  KTXS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant opened its doors on Monday at 228 Chestnut St. (right across from the Taylor County Courthouse). The restaurant now serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.  Abilene Reporter News
  • Life of Pie opened its new northside location at 1045 N. Judge Ely Blvd. in the University Hills Shopping Center Tuesday— the bakery and bistro is open Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Abilene Reporter News

  • During a routine commercial vehicle inspection today, a semitruck passenger ran from his vehicle and law enforcement is searching for him.  FOX West Texas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fans began lining up early Thursday for the 14th Annual Outlaws and Legends Music Festival, which begins today at the Back Porch of Texas and ends Saturday night. Organizers announced that Blackhawk will not perform due to a medical situation—its first such billing change in 14 years, with proceeds going to Ben Richey Boys Ranch and Family program.  KTXS
  • A Taste of Ireland — The Irish Music and Dance Sensation will perform with modern flair at 7:30 p.m. April 3 at the Abilene Auditorium, 1100 N. Sixth St, and the show is part of a tour visiting several Texas cities in March and April.  Abilene Reporter News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Abilene Regional Airport has proposed a $70 million terminal expansion with an improved boarding area, updated baggage claim systems and a new fire suppression system—upgrades that are needed as the airport nears its 57th anniversary. The project funding will be decided in a bond election on May 3 with $20 million in local funds and a matching $50 million in FFA grants—if approved, the upgrades will boost safety and capacity.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hendrick Health announced Wednesday the appointment of Dr. Josh Reed as its first assistant chief medical information officer to bridge the gap between medical staff, management and IT - his role will ensure compliance and best practices as the organization develops its connected care strategy. His appointment follows similar leadership changes in 2024 that boosted patient-centric care at the system.  Abilene Reporter News

SPORTS NEWS

  • McMurry University will host the Area 14 Special Olympics basketball competition at Kimbrell Arena on Saturday with two sessions—one from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and another from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—and the free event will encourage fans to bring loose change to help support Special Olympics.  KTXS
