Good morning, Abilene. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 3rd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Global Samaritan Resources in partnership with the Community Foundation of Abilene launched a community bed initiative to help local residents get a good night's sleep. The program began with 500 bed frames donated by Abilene Christian University (180 beds have been matched with mattresses so far) and will deliver 256 more beds by the end of may (distributed through United Way 211 and local nonprofits).  KTXS
  • The Salvation Army of Abilene is providing aid to flood victims in South Texas after heavy rains caused up to four feet of water in some homes. Since Saturday, its five mobile feeding units have delivered over 13,000 meals, snacks, drinks, and hygiene kits—helping many affected residents get the support they need.  KTXS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Abilene Fire Department responded Tuesday afternoon to a house fire on the city's north side in the 1800 block of North 8th St—officials later determined the cause was accidental and the house sustained significant smoke and fire damage with no injuries reported.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Abilene Police Department will host a free, community-wide active shooter training on May 23 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the APD conference room (4565 S. First St.). Space is limited and attendees must register to secure a spot.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Almost half of Texas counties did not have a hospital or birth center for maternity care, leaving many rural mothers with long drives and emergency transfers. Hendrick Medical Center officials said shortages of OB-GYNs, low Medicaid reimbursements, and limited staff force rural providers to plan for emergencies carefully—often opting for earlier C-sections to reduce delays.  KACU
