COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is hosting its annual Spring Medication Cleanout this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. outside the TTUHSC School of Nursing at 1674 Pine St—residents can drive through to safely dispose of unused prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, syringes, and sharps to prevent accidental poisonings.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • Abilene police arrested Zachary Pirtle on April 8th on two counts of aggravated assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child after he allegedly assaulted a child multiple times in February 2024—Pirtle now faces a $400,000 bond.  KTXS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Abilene's Development Corporation is partnering with R+L Carriers to build a 58,000 square foot trucking terminal on nearly 21 acres at the Access Business Park with a $15M investment and a $1.465M incentive package that will keep 16 jobs and create 22 new ones. DCOA President Misty Mayo said the project will boost local economic growth.  KTXS
  • Local officials say tourism is boosting Abilene's economy as out-of-town visitors contributed 22.6% of all spending in March—chamber data shows—and the zoo attracts over 250,000 guests annually. They anticipate forthcoming reports will show overall economic impact will exceed $500 million—reflecting Abilene's growing appeal.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hardin-Simmons University was designated a Military Friendly School Tuesday after 1,800 schools were surveyed and only 830 met the criteria for military student support for the 2025-26 academic year. The school is near Dyess Air Force Base and offers tuition assistance and a veteran support group — key programs that help military-affiliated students.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • School nurses in Clyde are watching unvaccinated students after a Lubbock child died on Thursday from measles pulmonary failure and are following CDC guidelines with local and state health departments. They will send any student who tests positive home until four days after their rash clears and may require unvaccinated children to stay home for 21 days—there are no confirmed cases in Abilene yet.  KTXS

  • Formerly known as Travis Elementary School—now Landmark at Abilene—held its official ribbon cutting today as it reopens as affordable housing at 1101 S. 9th St with a clubroom, on-site leasing office, dog park, and washer and dryer connections for residents aged 62 or older.  KTXS
