Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.
Good morning, Abilene.
Abilene Police are asking the community for help finding 25-year-old Jeremy Neves who was last seen Thursday night at a south Abilene nightclub and may have been involved in a car crash while driving a light-colored 2002 Oldsmobile Alero (he is 5’3” and wears dark-rimmed glasses).
Abilene ISD will stop allowing cell phones for all students starting next school year as they will use Yondr pouches—exceptions will be made for emergencies and medical needs.
More details including campus procedures and FAQs will be released closer to fall.
Mann Middle School will soon be known as Mann STEAM Academy after Abilene ISD voted for the change during their Monday board meeting.
The new curriculum will focus on STEM and fine arts and will include a Project Lead The Way elective (letting students study space one semester and art the next).
Today, Abilene City Council is discussing a request for $27M to buy generators for water treatment plants and upgrade energy systems at city facilities after the 2021 snowstorm exposed backup failures.
If approved, the funding – with $15.8M for generators and $10.6M for equipment upgrades – will be added to the 2026 budget, and final approval on the generators is expected on June 12.
