COMMUNITY NEWS

  • All Kind Animal Initiative in Abilene now gives free heartworm treatment to shelter dogs by testing every animal before surgery even after adoption, giving them a chance at a healthier life. The program began ramping up early testing in the last six months—this treatment would normally cost up to $1500 and is funded by community donations.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • A weekend cyber attack on City of Abilene computer servers disrupted online services while emergency services remained active, and city officials disconnected affected systems, launched an investigation, and confirmed cash and check payments remain accepted—no unauthorized financial activity was found.  KTXS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pope Francis passed away at 88 this morning after a long battle with his health and weeks of hospital treatment for double pneumonia one day after Easter—St. Vincent Catholic Church in Abilene will host a memorial mass later this week to honor his global leadership in the Catholic faith.  KTXS
  • Kayla Young (28) was named Executive Director of the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature after former director Molly Bellah stepped down in October; she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hardin-Simmons University, is a member of the Nonprofit Leadership Academy, and is married with a son.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting for the May 3 City and School General Elections begins today and continues until April 29 — voting takes place at various designated sites including election offices and city halls across the Big Country and Concho Valley.  KTXS
  • Dyess B-1B Lancers from the 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron arrived at Misawa Air Base in Japan last week to join a rotational bomber task force that trains to support allies and boost regional stability (this deployment is part of a broader U.S. Air Force training effort).  KTXS
  • Abilene Regional Airport, which has served the community for over 50 years, will hold a special bond election on May 3 with early voting today to decide on terminal expansion and upgrades. The proposal — aiming to boost seating from 60 to 200 and update features such as elevators, baggage claim, and fire suppression — is estimated at about 70 million dollars with a tax increase of $13.43 per $100,000 in value.  KTXS
