CULTURE NEWS

  • The Western Heritage Classic runs from today to May 11 at the Taylor County Expo Center with family activities including the world’s largest Bit and Spur Show, a Chuckwagon Cookoff, Children's Stickhorse Rodeo and Ranch Rodeo. The event starts with a noon parade in downtown Abilene — featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cisco College will host its first graduation ceremony in Abilene at 6 p.m. May 12 at the Abilene Convention Center—celebrating the campus's 20th anniversary—and will honor 166 graduates along with 63 Dual Credit students, including a historic group from Holland Medical High School.  KTXS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Prairie dogs at Red Bud park are being treated for mange by Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center — the center uses frontline spray and NexGard with weekly checkups — and will do a follow-up treatment three weeks later.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, May 7, officials held a ceremony at the Taylor County Courthouse to honor those who died in the line of duty nationwide—wreaths and flags were displayed to pay tribute to fallen officers.  KTXS
  • The City of Abilene halted scalping water from the Clear Fork of the Brazos River on April 21 when a broken pipeline forced the stop—even though water levels allowed pumps to operate. The city said scalping will resume after the repairs are complete.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and experts urge everyone to use sun protection like SPF 30 daily—brief outdoor exposure can cause UV damage in all skin tones. They recommend monthly self-checks and an annual skin exam to catch melanoma early.  KTXS
  • Hendrick Medical Center earned an A Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog that rates hospital safety—its leaders credit the grade to strict safety protocols and a dedicated team.  KTXS
