  • Westminster Presbyterian Church and the IRC launched New Roots Garden on May 2 to offer 11 garden boxes for local refugees to cultivate produce and reconnect with familiar farming skills—helping them build new roots in Abilene.  Abilene Reporter News
  • Abilene's main library is moving 280,000 items to Heritage Square, where an expanded children’s area (including a themed forest room) will serve community members; the new location will reopen Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m.  KTXS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • USPS announced a rate increase effective July 13 that will raise a Forever stamp from 78 cents to 82 cents and adjust other mailing prices by about 4.8%, a change aimed to sustain operations; local residents who rely on post office boxes should be ready for these adjustments—plan ahead.  KTXS

  • New government documents released Friday reveal a UFO sighting near Abilene on Jan. 1, 1948 — witness A. Schroeder saw a bell-shaped blue-green glow low on the western horizon briefly at 1:25 and 1:30 a.m., with the object reappearing five minutes later.  KTXS

  • The Western Heritage Classic held its first Top Dog Competition at the Taylor County Expo Center on May 9, where cattle dogs showcased herding skills — Derk Robinson and his border collie Gus won the contest.  Abilene Reporter News
