COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Abilene Kennel Club held its annual dog show at the Taylor County Expo Center and Coliseum over the weekend, where more than 700 dogs competed in events testing their looks and obedience—with Best in Show winners of a Boxer on Friday, a Pointer on Saturday, and a Bulldog on Sunday.  Abilene Reporter News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wylie High School will expand its campus with new facilities—including a dual-purpose storm shelter and an auxiliary gym for severe weather—thanks to a multi-million dollar bond approved in 2023.  KTXS
  • Pioneer Pathways Learning Center announced it will end its full-time, five-day-a-week daycare services by August 15—after serving families for over 50 years, the center plans to assist affected parents and will continue its Children's Day Out program. A parent expressed frustration over receiving mixed messages just before the closure was confirmed.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City announced its Cypress Street Improvement Project entered its final phase Monday—this phase will close part of Cypress Street and North 2nd Street while keeping alleys and sidewalks open. The second section will begin this summer and early fall and is expected to finish in a year and a half.  KTXS
  • A Russian-based ransomware group—Qilin—claimed it stole 477 GB of data from several city departments during an April 18 cyberattack and demanded ransom by May 27 to avoid releasing files that include tax returns and government documents. Abilene officials have not yet confirmed the claim.  KTXS
