  • Industry experts say the New World screwworm, a pest eradicated decades ago, could return and disrupt the local livestock industry if it reaches Abilene. Officials have closed the border for 60 to 90 days—aiming to protect Texas from the parasite's spread.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • An Abilene man was killed at Possum Kingdom Lake on June 6 when the propeller of a boat struck him while he was being pulled on a tube + police charged 21-year-old Justin Mitchell Pillard with intoxication manslaughter.  Abilene Reporter News
  • On Thursday, June 5, two women allegedly stole merchandise from Living Chic, a local consignment shop in Abilene when saleswoman Kandace Miller noticed missing items around 4:30 p.m.—community members quickly shared names and photos that were sent to the police.  KTXS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Thousands traveled to Abilene for the Texas High School State Rodeo finals, bringing 2,500 to 3,000 visitors here and about $1.7 million into the local economy — families are spending between $1,500 and $4,500 for their trip. The event, hosted at the Abilene Expo Center for 36 years, continues through Saturday — drawing contestants and fans to local attractions.  KTXS
  • The Coleman PRCA Rodeo injected over $500K into the local economy in three days—local businesses saw more customers and higher sales. Officials expect the boost to help support future events.  FOX West Texas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service from San Angelo is still surveying Abilene after Sunday night storms that downed trees & triggered widespread power outages and property damage, including a tilted KTXS News station roof. Officials reported wind gusts between 70 to 90 miles per hour and will complete additional surveys to determine if straight-line winds or a tornado caused the damage.  KTXS
  • A few landowners in west central Texas received $155K from the Texas A&M Forest Service & helped reduce wildfire risk.  FOX West Texas

  • Abilene native Miguel Espinoza won the City Council Place Five runoff this weekend and will be sworn in on July 16—he aims to use his CPA background to guide budget decisions on street improvements and support a business-friendly environment.  KTXS
