EDUCATION NEWS

  • Abilene ISD is preparing for potential changes as Senate Bill 10—awaiting Governor Greg Abbott’s signature since June 1—may require all public classrooms to display a durable Ten Commandments poster measuring 16 inches wide by 20 inches tall.  KTXS
  • The United Way of Abilene launched its Built by Books Campaign to boost early childhood literacy in Sweetwater — providing free, age-appropriate books each month to children from birth to five years old. Dr. Cathy Ashby said the program partners with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to help every child in Nolan County get a strong start in reading.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Abilene City Council approved nearly $1 million to boost cybersecurity after a recent cyberattack disrupted city servers—IT Director Troy Swanson detailed that the funds will restore critical systems and reinforce protections against future incidents.  KTXS
  • At Monday’s council meeting, the discussion on the Tye Volunteer Fire Department’s future was cut short after Councilmember Arp questioned the agenda item—leaving residents worried about the department’s fate. Mayor Pro-Tem Moore assured that the department is not being disbanded and said the council will revisit the issue soon.  KTXS
  • Abilene City Council confirmed the June 7 runoff election results on June 16 with Miguel Espinoza winning the Place 5 seat by over 58.24% of the votes — the local business owner and community advocate will take his seat immediately after running on a platform focused on economic growth, infrastructure improvements, and increased civic engagement.  KTXS
