COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Abilene Zoo will celebrate World Giraffe Day on June 21 by hosting activities such as early morning yoga on the giraffe terrace, tours behind the scenes, educational chats, and painting sessions with the giraffes in honor of its resident giraffe (Congo) as he turns 10. Admission is included with any zoo ticket and all proceeds will support the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.  KTXS
  • Temperatures reached near 100 in Abilene on Tuesday, prompting many homeless individuals to seek relief while the Salvation Army of Abilene posted on Facebook that it needed sandwich bread—ground beef, chicken, sausage, bacon and milk to offer meals this summer.  KTXS

  • Two drivers were treated after a four-vehicle crash at an intersection—police said a driver ran a red light.  FOX West Texas

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chuy's Mexican Restaurant near the Mall of Abilene had its sign delivered today — moving closer to its planned opening next month. The Papa Murphy's at 1441 Barrow Street closed on June 12 and will be replaced by a 7 Brew Coffee Shop with construction starting in August and ending in November.  KTXS
  • Local businesses see fewer customers as the $9 million Cypress Street Improvement Project nears end—sidewalks on the 300 block are finished while demolition on the 100 block forces customers to park farther away. Business owners say the construction will hurt sales until it is done by year’s end—tourist visits have dropped during the busy summer season.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • Juan Adrian Ortiz was sentenced to 195 years in prison for trafficking and sexually assaulting a child at an Abilene hotel in August 2023—court documents show he accepted money from men in exchange for sex with the victim.  KTXS
  • A resident at Summit at Abilene North says she hears gunshots and fights often—she reported a drive-by at 4:00 a.m.—with incidents occurring three or four times a week near Mann Middle School, leaving her worried that rising crime makes the area unsafe for renters.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Abilene Police Department is honoring Officer James "Jimmy" Spann, who was shot in a hostage standoff on June 17 (1954), as his courage and sacrifice are remembered 71 years later when the community built a home for his family.  KTXS

  • Triple-digit heat endangers pets in West Texas as pet owners are urged to keep water available, reduce outdoor time, and avoid leaving animals in parked cars — the All-Kind Animal Initiative shared safety tips on Facebook.  KTXS
