  • All Kind Animal Initiative in Abilene has stopped selling spay and neuter vouchers after finding that the vouchers no longer covered the full cost and caused confusion for pet owners— the organization will still help residents find affordable pet services.  KTXS

  • Abilene Police located a car tied to a case — pulled from Lytle Creek — that may give a Big Country family closure.  FOX West Texas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Annette Addo-Yobo, crowned Miss Texas last June and the first immigrant to hold the title, urged young women to embrace their true selves instead of fitting a mold—she also finished as first runner up at Miss America earlier this year. The upcoming Miss Texas competition airs on Channel 12 June 28 at 8 p.m.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Abilene passed a rigorous SACSCOC review and renewed its accreditation for 10 years (with an interim review every five years). President Lori Rice-Spearman said the outcome shows the center’s strong focus on quality student outcomes.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emily Crawford took office as Abilene City Manager on Wednesday and was officially sworn in on Thursday morning at City Hall—she is the second woman to hold this role. She left her previous post in Brownwood after more than 14 years managing city initiatives.  KTXS
  • The Texas House passed a law funding security upgrades at Dyess Air Force Base to improve the gates at the Tye entrance—Arnold Boulevard as the base prepares for the B-21 Raider arrival. House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington said the project is critical for national defense.  KTXS
