COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of West Central Texas is expanding its original 30,000 square foot warehouse by adding 5,000 square feet to include a drive-through pantry and more office space to help those working minimum wage jobs. Construction started last year and will be finished by September—local residents will soon have improved access to food assistance.  KTXS
  • Abilene residents are invited to a free family movie night at Moody Coliseum on July 15, with activities starting at 6 p.m. and a screening of 'The Grinch' at 7 p.m.—the first 100 guests receive free snow cones and children get take-home ornament kits.  KTXS
  • Abilene Precision Moving is coordinating with local authorities to deliver a big donation to Kerrville and nearby counties hit by recent flooding and will use two 36 foot enclosed trailers on Saturday, July 12. The company is asking for contributions of cleaning supplies, baby items, clothing and food+ donations can be dropped off in Tuscola from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and in Abilene from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.+  KTXS
  • Abilene community members are mourning Miriam Holly Frizzell, who died in the July 4th Hill Country flooding and was fondly remembered by long-time friend Renee Davis for her bright smile and caring heart. Her funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest—donations in her name are requested for the Alzheimer’s Association or Kerr County Flood Relief Fund.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • Abilene police said 31-year-old Christopher Whittington, accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Blessed Alifi Zola at the Maison Blanche apartment complex Monday evening, turned himself in to Irving police at 4 a.m. Wednesday — he faces murder charges with a $1M bond.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Abilene Christian University was licensed in September 2024 to begin nuclear research on a liquid-fueled, small modular reactor that uses molten salt technology. The reactor is expected to come online between the end of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027—ACU said the safe design will help address key energy, water, and medical isotope needs.  KTXS
