The Alliance for Women and Children hosted its second annual Backpacks and Blessings event at Abilene, handing out over 400 backpacks, school supplies, games, burritos and snow cones to help families get ready for the school year.

The American Automobiles Association said the national average for regular gasoline climbed to $4.07 per gallon after a decline, marking a record for August, and Abilene drivers saw steady increases with Texas averaging about $3.63 per gallon.
Uncertainty at the Strait of Hormuz is keeping oil prices high.

Rep. Patterson is advocating to move the school start to September to avoid the sweltering heat and protect student health & welfare, especially for athletes and band members.
The proposal aims to shield students from the risks of summer heat and improve their overall well-being.

Abilene Environmental Health Division inspected local restaurants Aug.
3-7 for food safety, finding several violations. IHOP, Mr. Gatti's Pizza, and others reported issues such as raw beef stored on the floor & blocked handwashing sinks, with some problems corrected on site while scores ranged from 84 to 99.
