- ➤ Abilene police walked Katelyn Henning to her first day of kindergarten to honor her father—Officer Daniel Henning, who died from eye cancer. He had told his fellow officers he was sad he would not be there for her, so they made sure she did not feel alone. KTXS
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Austin Heuermann, an Abilene man, shot at a SWAT vehicle during a four-hour standoff (he was arrested Wednesday evening) and now faces over a dozen felony charges including aggravated assault against a public servant, possession of meth, arrest evasion, and unlawful firearm possession by a felon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Abilene ISD improved its academic performance in 2024-25—raising the percentage of students at A- or B-rated schools from 6% to 34%, boosting the district rating from 70 to 75, and improving Abilene High School to a B rating of 86. KTXS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Abilene City Council delayed new BYOB permit changes that would restrict business hours and revoke permits after multiple police calls—City Manager Emily Crawford’s proposal, aimed at Bravo Hookah Lounge after three shooting incidents, was set aside as council members expressed caution while letting businesses operate as usual. - ➤ The Texas Department of Agriculture is taking action against New World screwworm, which remains 370 miles away but could cost billions for livestock if it spreads—Commissioner Sid Miller said that the agency is developing both a fly bait and an ivermectin treatment, though these tools are not yet available and may take years to complete.
