Dyess Fire and Emergency Services’ Captain Lawson 'Gus' Stuart rescued a construction worker from a 30-foot trench on Feb.
10, 2025, and he received the IAFC Ben Franklin Award for Valor on Aug. 14 during Fire-Rescue International — a national honor for bravery.

Chike, a locally founded business known for protein coffee, landed on the 2026 Inc. 5000 list and ranked No.1 in Abilene.
Founded in 2010, the company will continue innovating healthy products using local talent and West Texas work ethic.
🎭 Culture
Later in September, the West Texas Fair and Rodeo returns to the Taylor County Expo Center with carnival rides, live shows and rodeo competitions, including a new Lone Star College event & a PRCA event.
A downtown parade is scheduled on Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m. and admission costs vary.
🎓 Education
Two Abilene ISD educators—Noah Watson, a kindergarten teacher at Bowie STEM Academy, and Katie Condra, an English teacher at ATEMS—earned Region 14 Teacher of the Year honors and will advance to state competition in the Texas Teacher of the Year program.
