Good morning, Abilene. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 16th of August.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two AEP Texas line workers rescued a mother and daughter from their overturned car on a service road in Abilene—moving the child to a warm truck and aiding the woman until paramedics arrived.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After criteria changes and legal challenges, the Texas Education Agency released new accountability ratings for 2024-2025—updating how school performance is measured for the coming year.  FOX West Texas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas A&M Forest Service raised the Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level 2 today due to dry fuels, warm weather, and more attack calls in Big Country. The agency said 11 planes — ready to help ground crews — are on standby if needed.  KTXS
  • A federal judge in San Antonio heard arguments on Friday over Senate Bill 10, a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott in June that requires every public school classroom to display a 16 inch by 20 inch poster of the Ten Commandments starting Sept. 1 (some school officials worried about inclusivity). The ACLU, representing 16 parents, argued the law violates the First Amendment and the judge's decision will decide if the measure takes effect as planned.  FOX West Texas
  • Abilene ISD voters will decide on November 4 if the district can get over $10 million each year through Proposition A—if it passes, school tax bills will drop by about $174 while the funds help cover a $3.4 million deficit, boost employee pay, and update an aging bus fleet.  KTXS
