- ➤ Abilene Zoo is hosting its Breakfast with a Bite event this Saturday, August 23 at 8:15 a.m.—visitors will enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast, zoo entry, a meet and greet, reserved show seating, and the Caribbean Cove exhibit opens Friday with admission at $25 for guests aged 3 and up and free for children under 2. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Lupe Garcia, a bus driver for Wylie ISD and community coach, died Tuesday morning in a bus accident—friends said he always had a warm smile and left a big mark on local youth. KTXS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Abilene ISD taxpayers will see a decrease in the school tax rate regardless of the upcoming vote (November 4th) on Proposition A. If the measure passes, the district will add new funding to help close a $3.5 million operating gap and fix staff and bus issues, but without it, taxes will drop by $208.67. KTXS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Dyess Air Force Base announced that Airman 1st Class Adam Bartkoski, a member of the 7th Civil Engineer Squadron, was found dead off base Sunday—base officials said they will provide support to his family and colleagues as they grieve this loss. KTXS
- ➤ The City of Abilene will close South 14th and Vine Streets today from 5:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for water main repairs, and residents are asked to follow detours (use caution in the area). KTXS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center received a $1.3M grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration to expand telehealth services in Texas and Louisiana. The four-year grant will provide $325,000 per year through 2029 to support digital health programs—including remote patient monitoring and artificial intelligence—for rural and underserved communities.
