Abilene's newest Firehouse Subs will open its 1,500th location on Friday, Aug.
21 at 2608 Enterprise Drive, featuring a $37,000 grant to the local fire department for water-rescue gear, family-friendly activities, and free subs giveaways with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
🎓 Education
Abilene ISD began the 2026-27 school year in 18 schools today, serving over 14,500 students.
Parents and students shared excitement and some nerves about returning to class after a long summer break — marking a fresh start in education.
Students began moving into campus housing today at McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, where they unpacked belongings and met new roommates.
Many students shared mixed feelings (excitement and nervousness) as they started a new chapter in college.
Abilene ISD will serve free breakfast + lunch during the 2026-27 school year through a federal program that covers all students regardless of income.
The district is also launching MealViewer, a free online tool that shares daily menus and allergen alerts for families.
