COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The West Texas Fair & Rodeo will take place at the Taylor County Expo Center from Sept. 4-13 and kicks off Thursday with a free Sneak-a-Peek preview night where carnival ride tickets must be purchased. A parade with the Stars over Texas theme will run in Downtown Abilene Saturday at 10:30 a.m. along the same route as last year.  KTXS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A water main break Tuesday morning forced several Clyde businesses to close and switch to to-go orders — owners say repeated water line breaks have led to sudden shutdowns that affect hours and worker pay. La Tejanita Burritos and Bakery prepared breakfast early before the shutdown and now faces uncertainty about reopening tomorrow.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men aged 17 and 21 were shot Sunday at Sears Park on Ambler and taken to hospital—one is in serious condition and police said neither is cooperating, with no arrests made.  KTXS
  • Mario Valerio, an Abilene man, was convicted of murdering Bruce Alan Payne during a family dispute in March 2023 and was sentenced to 75 years in prison—he now faces decades behind bars.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • COVID-19 cases in Texas have risen as schools start back and fall arrives — the CDC reported more cases on Aug. 26 and urged everyone to practice good hygiene. KTXS will interview Family Nurse Practitioner Elaine Thomas to explain the reasons behind the increase.  KTXS
  • Abilene officials are continuing mosquito spraying after West Nile virus was detected while a local doctor urged residents to take precautions and not worry—stating that the treatment is targeted and effective. San Angelo residents were also advised to remain cautious as officials monitor virus activity.  FOX West Texas
