ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Texas A&M Forest Service and fire departments from Eastland, Cisco, and nearby towns responded Monday afternoon to two fires near Baird—one that burned 500 acres and was 90% contained by Monday night and another that spread 30 acres and reached 25% containment by 9 p.m.—as officials worked to control the flames. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Blaise Regan, a member of Abilene City Council, withdrew from the race for State Representative today because his family faces a health issue — he said he will complete his term and will not run for re-election. KTXS
- ➤ Abilene launched its first paid parking lot near Cypress and 6th Street outside the Double Tree by Hilton on Sept. 22, offering the first two hours free and requiring a QR code scan to pay. Some local employees expressed mixed views—while one worries the new fee may lower their take-home pay, another is relieved not to pay for parking near work. KTXS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Abilene is boosting its fight against West Nile virus after mosquitoes tested positive near Valentine Park, downtown and on Buffalo Gap Road. City crews will use larvicide in public areas and residents can get free tablets at the Abilene Taylor County Public Health District on North 6th Street—health officials advise draining water and wearing long sleeves. - ➤ Abilene realtors reported that home prices and sales remain stable despite a recent Fed rate cut as mortgage rates are driven by treasury yields — Ken Hogan noted Taylor County’s median price increased 2.2% compared to last year. KTXS
