Good morning, Abilene. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the busy intersection of E N 10th and Morrow Ln, residents have reported 71 days of dangerous driving due to faded turn lane markings—drivers often mistake the center lane for a turn-only lane near neighborhoods, an elementary school and a highway loop. Abilene officials said the lane markings are set as indicated, but locals urge clearer arrows and signs to prevent risks.  KTXS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Abilene's historic Paramount Theatre was honored as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark on Tuesday by the Texas Historical Commission—its marker now stands in front to commit the building to future preservation. The 1,600-seat theatre, built in 1928 and opened in May 1930, joins other local landmarks with this distinction.  KTXS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The West Texas Fair and Rodeo drew about 118,000 visitors this year and livestock shows drove $1.5 million into the local economy—ticket sales were up $80,000 compared to last year. Rochelle Johnson, the Expo Center’s Executive Vice President, said carnival proceeds support year-round operations at the center.  KTXS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Abilene reported that zebra mussels have invaded Lake Fort Phantom Hill and boaters must clean their boats—draining motors and live wells—to prevent the spread of the invasive species that harm native ecosystems and damage infrastructure.  KTXS
  • A fire, later known as the HeatWave fire, sparked Monday afternoon in Callahan County and burned several hundred acres of land. The Texas A and M Forest Service and local fire fighter departments responded—cooler temperatures and shifting winds helped them contain the blaze.  KTXS
