- ➤ Atmos Energy has donated $750,000 to food banks across eight states as part of its Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities initiative to help vulnerable families during Hunger Action Month—providing nonprofit partners with needed resources. KTXS
- ➤ On Wednesday morning, late veteran Gregory McPherson was laid to rest in an unaccompanied service in Abilene because he had no next of kin. Community members and local veterans gathered to honor his sacrifice—showing respect for his service and the bond they share. KTXS
- ➤ Residents in the North Shore and Sue Ellen neighborhoods have reported early morning noise and heavy traffic from the Lancium data center project, which has disrupted their routines at 5 a.m.—The project, a joint venture among Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle, will continue for a couple more years as city officials look into traffic solutions. - ➤ McMurry University formally named Dr. Lynne Murray its 11th president after a unanimous Board vote in September 2024 and she began her tenure on January 10th; a week of inauguration events will start tomorrow with an investiture ceremony on Friday—celebrations continue with a chapel event and a home football game against Howard Payne on Saturday. - ➤ Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 8 that will replace the STAAR test with three shorter exams given at the start, middle, and end of the school year beginning in 2027. The new tests will cover math, reading, science, and social studies for students in third to eighth grades and give a clearer view of progress—some parents believe this will ease stress while others noted that tests always stress students. - ➤ Monarch butterflies are flying through Merkel as they migrate south for winter—new flower beds in Mellinger Park by the Merkel Garden Club provide a safe haven that draws daily local visitors. KTXS

- ➤ At Hardin-Simmons University, students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program train service dogs to perform advanced tasks—such as turning light switches off—to help people with disabilities gain independence.
