COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Play Faire Park, a beloved miniature golf course in Abilene since 1947, faces possible closure as its family battles an alleged attempt by an individual to seize control. The owners launched a Go Fund me campaign — calling for community support — to keep the park open for future generations.  KTXS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hungry customers in Abilene began lining up at 10 a.m. Tuesday to get a taste of the new Chuy’s before it opened at 11 a.m. at 4104 S Clack St. — near the Hendrick Service Center at the Mall of Abilene, where it will serve Tex-Mex meals until 10 p.m.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cisco College’s recreation facility will be updated with a new playing surface, basketball goals, and chalked tennis and pickleball courts after receiving a $70,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Abilene—officials plan to break ground within the next year.  KTXS
  • Parents and educators met at the Abilene Education Foundation to discuss VATRE, an election that would let AISD receive an extra $10 million in funding while lowering one part of the school tax — a change aimed at addressing bus repairs and a $12 million deficit. The meeting, which started in August, helps inform voters ahead of the Nov. 4 election.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Abilene invites residents to help clean the Municipal Cemetery during Cemetery Cleanup Days, which run today to Oct. 12. City staff will remove non-compliant items—such as glass or improper decorations—after Oct. 12.  KTXS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Survivors, supporters and healthcare workers gathered at Taylor County Commissioners’ Court on Tuesday morning to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, urging the community to perform regular self-exams and get mammograms—health experts from Hendrick Breast Institute stressed early screening and offered support through The Hope Fund for those without insurance.  KTXS

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Abilene Youth Sports Authority announced plans for 10 new soccer fields—four turf and six grass—to serve over 1,200 current players and attract regional teams. Officials expect the facility to boost local participation and drive economic benefits as more teams find a nearby place to compete.  KTXS
