COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After more than 15 years of service, the Mockingbird Branch Library will close at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 while holding weekly story times through October, with new hold pickups and returns shifting to other branches starting Oct.17 and Nov.1 respectively. The closure will clear the way for two new library branches inside the Cesar Chavez and G.V. Daniels Recreation Centers to open early in 2026 — expanding local access to books, computers and programs.  KTXS

CRIME NEWS

  • The PARC is caring for Ember, a German Shepherd puppy whose broken femur from abuse is healing slowly as she is scheduled for surgery next week—Thomas Martin was arrested on a $15,000 bond for the abuse.  KTXS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Abilene is celebrating Spooky Season with events today such as an Oktoberfest downtown street party from 5-10 p.m. and a Zombie Crawl at Play Faire Park at 6 p.m. Later events include a paintball Zombie Hunt, a Día de los Muertos ofrenda and family festival at the Grace Museum, Boo at the Zoo, Haunted Abilene at the Swenson House and a Trunk-or-Treat at the police department—each adding festive fun across the city.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Abilene ISD is calling on nonprofits—government agencies and universities—to propose innovative school models under its Building Brighter Futures plan to expand high-quality education.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On the third day of the government shutdown, Congressman Arrington said he will hold back his paycheck until the government reopens+ he noted that if military members do not get paid during the shutdown, neither should members of Congress. He joins other lawmakers in showing support for furloughed federal workers until an appropriations agreement is reached.  KTXS
