BUSINESS NEWS

  • 32 Degrees Gourmet Ice Cream in Abilene is offering jobs for neurodivergent young adults to help them succeed at work—designed with a structure that provides routine and accessibility; the parlor has partnered with the Texas Workforce Commission to expand opportunities for these workers.  KTXS

CULTURE NEWS

  • An Aaron Watson Family Christmas will return to Abilene's historic Paramount Theatre on December 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. as gates open at 6 p.m. with tickets on sale Friday October 10.  KTXS
  • Less than one month after political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated, national religious organizations reported an increase in youth attendance—some schools saw a 15% rise and many refer to this as the 'Charlie Kirk Effect.' In Abilene, First Baptist Church’s Pastor Hunter Brown said his youth have long sought deeper connection—an ongoing shift that started in 2023 and reflects today's digital age challenges.  KTXS
  • The Grace Museum invites community members to honor loved ones by bringing photos and keepsakes to its month-long community ofrenda—displayed on the museum’s third floor through Oct. 30. The event is part of the run-up to the museum’s annual Día de Los Muertos festival and will add items to its growing collection for remembrance.  KTXS
  • Starfront Observatories near Abilene gives remote astrophotographers around the world access to one of the clearest Texas night skies, letting them control telescopes from afar. Founded by Bray Falls in 2024, the facility houses over 550 telescopes and uses an automated roof system—protecting equipment from weather damage.  KACU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has announced 11 projects to improve fish habitat and angler access across lakes in Big Country, including five projects at sites such as Kirby Reservoir and Fort Phantom Hill. The work will add upgrades such as fishing piers—dock lighting, bank stabilization, and erosion control features to boost fishing and conservation for Texans.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Part of Cypress St. reopened to traffic today as the city advanced its downtown improvement project plus construction began for a new parking lot at North 2nd and Pine St. that will finish in the spring.  KTXS
  • Downtown Abilene’s Cypress Street Improvement project is in its final phase as work on the 100 block nears completion by the end of this month—road construction will finish then while landscaping will start early next year and 80 to 90 free parking spaces will be added by spring.  KTXS
