  • Play Faire Park in Abilene is closing after serving the community since 1947 following a legal dispute over lease obligations between park owners and the property landlord—park staff will host Farewell Fest today and Saturday featuring a final round of miniature golf, live music, and vendor sales to mark the park's 70-year history. The crew said they will update locals about their next chapter on social media.  KTXS
  • Crossing guard Irma Molina starts her day early with a cup of coffee to guide students safely during October's dangerous commutes while warning distracted drivers to slow down—she sees phones and speeding as risks. Abilene is hiring new crossing guards to add extra safety for students.  KTXS

  • Aspen Blessing, an 18-year-old who died in a head-on collision in Callahan County, highlights the need for safe driving as National Teen Driving Safety Week nears—parents are urged to remind their teenagers to buckle up, obey speed limits, avoid phone use while driving, and steer clear of any substances.  KTXS

  • A Five Guys burger restaurant is coming to Abilene as part of a $1.2 million project in a 3,067 square foot space at 6950 S. Clack St. Construction will begin Oct 15 and finish Dec. 12 — the project includes new partition walls, ceilings, restrooms, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and finishes.  KTXS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Abilene Regional Airport remains fully staffed during the eight-day government shutdown — while other airports face long delays due to low staffing. Transportation Services Director Don Green praised the hard work of TSA and FAA partners and hopes the shutdown ends soon.  KTXS
  • Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said that a deadly screwworm case in a cow in Montemorelos, Mexico has prompted urgent actions to protect local cattle and rural jobs. Officials deployed TDA Swormlure traps across South Texas—and are coordinating with federal partners to stop further outbreaks.  FOX West Texas
