- ➤ Abilene’s historic Play Faire Park will reopen under new management after it closed following a legal dispute between former owners Chris and Melanie England and property owner Charles Wolfe — the miniature golf course, a community landmark since 1947, will see only minor changes when it reopens in the future. - ➤ Local banks worked together at First Financial’s 10th Annual Day of Service, helping nonprofits by making toys for zoo animals and cleaning a kangaroo exhibit—efforts that may lead to more banks teaming up statewide. KTXS
- ➤ Abilene’s historic miniature golf course (Play Faire Park) will reopen under new management after hosting its Farewell Fest amid a legal dispute. The park (opened in 1947) will make only minor changes to preserve its traditional style. KTXS
- ➤ On Monday afternoon, All Kind Animal Initiative celebrated one year at the Pet Adoption and Resource Center in Abilene with games, coffee, and pastries. Executive director Kelly McCoy said the new facility has boosted their work — over 600 animals have been sent to rescues and many more spayed and neutered — as it brings a fresh energy to the community. - ➤ Abilene Christian University was recognized as a Carnegie R2—High Research Activity institution, ranking it among the top 10% of research universities nationwide. The university invested over $8 million in research annually and awarded about 68 research doctorates each year to boost faculty opportunities and enhance student experiences. KTXS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials in the Big Country have put a burn ban in place on a dozen counties to lower wildfire risk as dry grass and gusty winds increase fire danger this fall — the Texas A&M Forest Service said it answered 25 new wildfire help calls after fires burned over 379 acres. KTXS
- ➤ Monarch butterflies on a 3000-mile journey to Mexico are making a crucial stop in Abilene where they rest by trees, including those by ACU (which have hosted roosts for over 50 years). Texas Master Naturalist Jean Dotson said locals can help the declining population by planting nectar and milkweed plants (like blue mistflower) and reducing mowing until mid-October. KTXS
