ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Abilene motorcyclist Stephen Hopkins, age 35, died on October 15 after his motorcycle struck the back of a turning car on Kenwood Drive while he was headed to pick up his girlfriend — a memorial ride is planned for 10 a.m. on November 1 at Shotwell Stadium. KTXS
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Earlier this month, KTXS reported that Ember, a German Shepherd puppy, was abused and had her leg amputated after suffering a broken femur—Thomas Martin was arrested on Sept. 22 for animal cruelty, and the PARC said Ember is now walking and growing stronger. KTXS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock visited TSTC in Abilene yesterday and toured its ambulance simulator and lab facilities where students gained hands-on training. He said the new Texas Education Freedom Accounts will provide over $10,000 per student starting 2026 to 2027 and offer families more choices while supporting local job growth—about 7,900 tech jobs were added recently. - ➤ Dry conditions and warm temperatures have stopped Taylor County farmers from planting winter wheat early, and they hope that rain soon will help both wheat and cotton yields — experts say a timely shower could boost the season. KTXS

- ➤ The City of Abilene is asking for sealed proposals to operate Maxwell Municipal Golf Course with bids accepted until 4 p.m. on November 13 at City Hall. A pre-proposal meeting is set for November 5 at 10:30 a.m. — the course closed on October 1 and its lease ended on September 30 — as the city prepares to choose a new management operator. KTXS

- ➤ McMurry University students will host the 2025 Flamingo 5K at Wilford Moore Stadium on Nov. 1 — check-in is at 9:30 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m.; the event will raise awareness and funds for local families affected by breast cancer with registration fees benefiting the Cancer Services Network.
