COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army launched its annual Angel Tree program on Nov 6 at First Financial Bank — featuring live music and remarks from community leaders. Major Joe Burton said the program gives families a chance to feel the holiday spirit as Christmas celebrations continue later at Potosi Live.  KTXS
  • The West Central Texas Food Bank is building a new center at its Abilene site to meet growing food needs as SNAP benefits drop and prices rise in 13 counties — the expanded facility will open in 2026 to support more local families.  KACU
  • Arrow Ford and Love & Care Ministries are hosting the 26th Annual Mission Thanksgiving on Nov. 21 at Arrow Ford to collect drive-thru donations that will help people in need of food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other essentials—donations are accepted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 4001 S.   • Community members gathered at Logsdon Chapel on Hardin-Simmons University campus for Hospice of the Big Country's Candlelight Memorial Service to honor loved ones lost — the program featured a national anthem, photo slideshow and the lighting of candles to offer comfort during the holiday season.  KTXS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • With Thanksgiving approaching, Abilene residents are preparing their meals as grocery prices are 2.7% higher than in August—forcing them to focus on essentials like turkey, stuffing, and green bean casserole and to share sides with neighbors to manage costs.  KTXS
  • Travelers at Abilene Regional Airport will soon have direct United Express flights to Denver and Houston by SkyWest, beginning in March 2026—part of Project Rise. The DCOA and the City created the partnership after community demand, aiming to boost local business connectivity—supporting Abilene’s growing economy.  KTXS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Melvin Martin Center for Children's Safety added cow sculptures—replicas of the well-known herd—to its campus to teach children about fire, bike, and traffic safety. Sponsor Jerry Love said the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the permanent exhibit that helps kids in Abilene and nearby communities.  KTXS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Willow Creek Gardens experts advised local gardeners to pick up fallen leaves, reduce watering to once every two weeks, and remulch flower beds to help lawns and gardens absorb more sunlight during colder nights—steps that will also protect tropical plants by bringing potted ones indoors and wrapping young trees with freeze cloth.  KACU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Farmers in the Big Country are facing uncertainty as the government shutdown nears 40 days and fund delays disrupt federal aid programs. They say rising costs and postponed support are hindering planting and harvest operations—adding pressure on local businesses and equipment dealers.  KTXS
  • Residents living near the AI facility have experienced heavy traffic in the late afternoon that makes it hard to reach work or stores—Texas DPS said they will increase patrols to help manage the congestion while locals wait for a long-term solution. This issue continues to affect daily commutes in affected neighborhoods.  KTXS
