- ➤ Downtown restaurants are competing in Abilene’s third annual Burger Brawl to boost business during the winter slump. Customers can sample creative burgers — including Catie’s Pies’ signature Big Poppa — and vote with punch cards due Monday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. KACU
- ➤ For National Social Worker Month in March, West Texas NASW will honor local leaders in Abilene by awarding Dr. Malcolm Earl Scott for Lifetime Achievement and Judge Phil Crowley as Public Elected Official of the Year—recognizing their efforts to address homelessness, health care, and mental support in the community. - ➤ Abilene Heritage Square will open on May 18 as a community hub with a public library, science center and auditorium — plus spaces for events and classes. Residents and visitors from nearby cities are hopeful it will spark downtown activity. KTXS
- ➤ Let Us Breathe Abilene acquired the former Fannin Elementary School at 2728 North 18th St. and is redeveloping it as a community hub. Phase one features an auditorium & cleaning today while raising 1.2M, with future phases to add local businesses and services over the next 10 to 15 years. KTXS

- ➤ Wylie ISD is advancing construction on its new South Elementary for K-5 as founding principal Alison South plans to create a family-like community with features including a storm shelter; staff moves are set to begin at the end of May with classes starting in fall during the 2026-2027 school year.
